Grupo Tortuguero de las Californias, A.C.


Grupo Tortuguero de las Californias, A.C. is a network of multiple communities located throughout 8 states in Northwest Mexico focused on the conservation of sea turtles. GTC engages local community members in their efforts to recover and protect migratory sea turtles. They are successfully in involving fishermen cooperatives, students, teachers, scientists, civil society organizations and government institutions.

Their objective is to 1) build a strong conservation network, 2) increase awareness of the human-caused threats to turtle survival and develop solutions to those threats, and 3) communicate the message widely, promoting the conservation of sea turtles throughout the region.

Their programs include:

Water Monitoring: A standardized method of obtaining information on population, distribution, health, genetics, characteristics, as well as identifying the particularities of their habitats.

Beach Monitoring: They carry out research on the beaches where turtles nest and protect the nests from human interference or from predators.

Environmental Education: A teaching program developed focusing on the biology and conservation of sea turtles that promotes human values and promotes prevention and mitigation actions.This program is endorsed by the Ministry of Public Education and carried out at schools.
